Scene in the Wilderness

About two week’s ago, I posted an image of a sunrise at Tracy Arm Fjord, which I witnessed during my Alaska Cruise.  I have went ahead and wrote a poem based on that image =)  These are actually fun exercises.  If there is any photo that you would like me to try and write a poem on, please feel free to post it in the comments section.

Scene in the Wilderness

Half asleep, my eyes can see
a most amazing serene beauty,
golden sunlight mixed with
white wispy clouds
touching areas of pink
all hugging the baby blue sky
tenderly
above a white
snow-capped mountain
in the middle
of the ocean,
like a postcard
I didn’t expect
to see in reality.

Scene in the wilderness,
magical pastels
painted by light
captured in my eyes,
framed in my mind,
shot with my lens,
forever lives
in my soul.

The waves thrash gently
below the ship,
icebergs float aimlessly,
wind blows ferociously
in my face
as my hand freezes,
holding dearly
to my camera
trying to capture
this moment
at the break
of dawn –
Day 9 –
Tracy Arm Fjord.

Young Love

With Valentine’s Day slowly approaching, I wanted to share a sweet poem about young love.

Young Love

Bon soir, midnight –
a starless sky
full of cotton-
candy clouds.

Between them
are figurines –
a sea horse, a dog,
a character,
a bunny with a gun –
imaginings,
ink blot tests
of the mind.

In the distance,
the shape, of
water slides,
and a sky light
shining colors
of the world.

Before us,
the crystal lake,
like a diamond
shimmering
with orange,
so quiet, so still.

The geese, they sing
for us
as we lay
together.

I can feel
your body
moving, breathing
next to mine.

Your arm
wraps around
me.  It feels
so warm, so tight,
so right…

Living the Dream

Last week, I posted some sunset photos from my Alaska trip and mentioned that I might write a poem based on those images.  I am delivering on my suggestion =)  Here is my original post.  Maybe next week, I will write a poem based on the 2nd image.

Sunset in the Ocean

Living the Dream

A beacon of light
shines
across the ocean
like a guiding light
of hope and dreams
for tired travelers
that travel the world.

Amazed by the beauty
of the colors
in the sky
as blue becomes purple,
purple blends with pink,
pink melts into orange,
and back into blue.

A blazing yellow light
shines though
from the glow
of the bright, hot sun
fierce and blinding
to naked the eye.

Flickers of light
sparkle and dance
creating a path
of enchantment
to the travelers’ eyes.

Not knowing
where they are going,
but knowing
that they are safe,
that they are one
with nature.

Loving the freedom,
living the dream,
watching
the sun set
across the sky
as it hovers
above the ocean.

I Heard Him Making Love to His Guitar

I heard this song on the radio the other day in the car while driving to work, zoning out as usual.  The instrumental sounds somehow mesmerized me and I had to write a poem about it.

I heard him making love
to his guitar,
stroking the strings
gently,
rhythmically,
mesmerizing me
musically.

Whisperings words of love
through my ears,
his buttery voice
melted my heart,
touched my soul.

He was making love
in front of you and me
so beautifully,
so magically,
so lonely.

Stroking the strings
gently,
rhythmically,
missing her,
missing him,
forever dreaming
everlong…

He was making love
to his guitar,
stroking the strings
gently,
rhythmically,
his buttery voice
fills my ears,
soothing it.

I breathe
to his breath,
I dream
to his dream,
I feel, I see
his fingers
stroking
the strings
of his guitar.

He was making love
to you and me
musically.

And this was the song Everlong (the acoustic version)” by Foo Fighters.

Hershey’s Kiss

Here is a fun poem about everyone’s favorite chocolate in the month of February.  I hope you enjoy this piece!

Hershey’s Kiss

An almond shaped like a gem,
placed in a swirling chocolate liquid
beating with life.
Sweet and scented,
twisted and molded
into a flattened teardrop.

Dark and brown
like nature’s dirt.
Carefully dressed
in silver,
sometimes in red,
sometimes in gold.

Hershey’s kiss,
shaped by He,
loved by Her.

Like a chocolate,
I melt in your mouth.

A Journey up the Mystical Mountain

Back in 2012, I created the Inspiration Circle where I would post a theme every month for everyone to create a piece of art (whether it was a poem, a short story, a painting or a photograph).  For one of the months, the theme was “friendship.”  The first draft of my poem was pretty bland because it lacked imagery, depth and emotion.  I was “telling” instead of “showing.”  So I threw that away and started fresh, focusing on imagery.  I decided to focus on the image of a pretty mountain in China and just for the sake of it, I used the Sestina structure.  I typically write in free verse because I don’t like restrictions; however, of all the poetic structures, sestinas are my favorite.  With sestinas, you are not restricted with syllables, rhythm or line length, but with end words.  With that, you often find yourself surprised with what you come up with.  If you never heard of a sestina, you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sestina.  I hope you enjoy this piece.

A Journey up the Mystical Mountain

Hidden in the fog, but showered with cherry blossoms,
we continued on our journey up the mountain.
The floral sent drifted in our nostrils while the wind brushed against our cheeks.
We’ve only been hiking for a few hours, but it seemed like eternity,
walking through the winding paths together –
a wonderful journey to be discovered.

Not knowing what to expect, I looked at you and discovered
how you have changed over the years, how you have blossomed
into a stronger person from the last time we were together.
The experiences from the past have given you strength to climb this mountain,
knowing that what you uncover will inspire you through eternity.
Catching you return my gaze, I became embarrassed and turned the other cheek.

With the sharp wind brushing against my face, I envisioned how rosy my cheeks
must be.  Hiking step by step, I have discovered
that I would love to live in this serene beauty for eternity –
high elevation, fresh air, sounds of trickling water, and pink cherry blossoms –
far away from the stress and demands of society, secluded in this mountain
with someone I trust, know and love – together

with you.  We’ve had our differences, but we remained together.
I remembered the last time we took photos cheek-to-cheek,
we were hiking up the crazy Santa Cruz mountains
and in the midst of it, we found a gem, we discovered
the most elegant waterfall next to a yellow rose about to blossom –
it was a symbol of our friendship, something we’ll remember for eternity.

“Best friends forever,” it seems like we said those words an eternity
ago, when we were six years old playing in the sandbox together.
We had no idea how our lives would change or how our friendship would blossom.
I recall getting ready for dances – putting on lipstick and powdering our cheeks,
and gushing about love, while mending broken hearts.  We had discovered
that life was full of winding paths and little hills, just like this mountain.

Step by step, hill by hill, we are finally reaching the top of this mountain.
Th sun is about to set, this will be the climb we talk about for eternity,
as sunlit rays shine upon us with mystical colors, we discovered
that we forgave each other for all the past tension.  We were happy together.
Love and trust need to be challenged.  Though we may not see cheek-to-cheek
on many things, we continue to water our friendship so that it can blossom.

High above the world, on this mystical mountain, we stand together
to capture a moment for eternity.  You gently brush a tear off my cheek
only to discover that you were crying too, under the beautiful cherry blossoms.

Twilight

The soft glow emanates from the sky,
no longer beautiful pinks and purples,
but a dark, dark blue and a dim, dim black.
My eyes adjust to the darkness,
as a chill goes up my spine.

Ducks and crickets sing to the night,
fish perform acrobatics
in the lake
causing ripples to spread,
here, there, everywhere…

**********************************

I feel your hand embrace mine,
the warmth tingles up my spine
as I lean in close to you
hearing your heart beat
against mine.

We watch the day turn to night,
listening to nature’s symphony.

The Sense of Urgency

I find it amusing to see cars race to cut me off only to be stopped at the red light, needing to brake furiously.  Americans are often in a hurry to accomplish so many things on a given day that they fail to see the beauty in the world.  I try not to be one of those people, so I make it a conscious decision to take a moment to breathe.

The Sense of Urgency

Cars on the freeway
speeding and braking,
braking and speeding,
drivers on the freeway
cursing and cussing,
cussing and cursing
because they’re gonna be late.

People in line
crossing their arms
stomping their feet
cursing and cussing,
cussing and cursing
because they’re gonna be late.

Tick, tock, tick tock
what is the meaning
of the clock?

clock
Every delay
can make you late
for a meeting,
a workout,
a dinner,
a hangout,
or a sitcom
in bed.

Every delay
is an opportunity
to enjoy the moment,

to watch the  sun set
in brilliant colors,
to watch the rain reflect
off wet pavement,

to sing along
to a song,
to listen
to the angelic voice
of the cashier,

to see a child
smile
from pure joy,
to simply
take a moment
for yourself
to cherish
every delay

every day
and make it well spent
because you never know
when your last delay
will be.

Tranquil Beauty

I wrote this poem while on a plane ride and was just mesmerized by the scene unfolding before me.

Tranquil Beauty

High above in the troposphere,
a blanket of clouds form a sea,
thin, wispy and free
floating like cream on your coffee.

Imagine walking through cloudy fog
with no pressure, no resistance,
knee deep and feeling nothing
but the white that you see.

Canoeing through waves of white,
textured clouds, feeling motion
without force, moving, but standing
still in an ocean where there’s no reflection,
but the ones in your mind.

Listen to the wispy clouds crashing
weightlessly against the imaginary shore.
Waves so gentle like foams of cream,
a truly silent beauty.

As the sun starts to set
above the sea of clouds,
gradients of pink and orange
melt into the baby blue sky.
A sunset where
no bird’s eye has really seen.

As we fly lower and lower
into the field of clouds,
a beautiful meadow of white,
sparkles of precipitation
appear before my very eyes,
leaving behind
trails of shooting stars,
in the twilight sky,
a stream of wishes by my window side.
I close my eyes and dream.

Frozen in Time, The Beat Goes On

This was a fun poem I wrote based on the theme of music.  It’s one of my favorite pieces because I just love the musical rhythm and the fact that I was pretending to be a man.

Frozen in Time, The Beat Goes On

Sparkling glitter and gold,
swaying side to side,
she captures my eyes
keeping me hypnotized.
Longing for her touch,
wanting to know her name,
my heart beats faster
as I gasp for breath.
The beat goes on.

Music filling my ears,
her body filling my mind,
I dance and dance
swinging and shaking
trying to catch her eye,
waiting … longing …
hesitating …

holding my breath,
she looks my way
and I am lost.
lost in my mind,
frozen in time,
caught in her eyes
hypnotized.
The beat goes on.

Working her way
through the crowd,
sliding and gliding
to be by my side.
She’s grasping my hand,
I’m gasping for air,
but without a care,
she dances,
seducing me with her hips.
The beat goes on.

How can I ever forget
the girl who captured my heart?
The girl like an angel,
but with mischief in her eyes.

My little witch
who kept my heart beating
as our bodies swayed,
lips met, minds collide.

On that special night,
our souls touched
and I lost my sight,
blinded by love.
The beat goes on.
